The old adage says we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. While we don’t always choose our colleagues or family, we have immense power over our “Relational Circle”—the inner group of friends, mentors, and confidants we invite into our most personal spaces. “The Relational Circle” is about moving from accidental friendships to intentional connections that challenge, inspire, and support our highest selves.
The Energy of Influence
Every person we interact with leaves an imprint on our energy and outlook. Some people act as “expanders,” showing us what is possible and encouraging our growth. Others may inadvertently anchor us in old habits or negative mindsets. Curating your circle isn’t about being exclusionary; it’s about being protective of your personal evolution.
Three Ways to Curate Your Relational Circle:
- Seek Out “The Expanders”:
- Identify people who live in a way that inspires you—not through their possessions, but through their character, their curiosity, or their resilience. Make a conscious effort to spend more time in their presence, whether through direct conversation or by following their work and ideas.
- Practice “Generous Boundaries”:
- Boundaries are not walls; they are gates. Learn to kindly but firmly limit the time you spend in environments or conversations that consistently leave you feeling drained or diminished. By saying “no” to shallow or draining interactions, you save your “yes” for relationships that truly matter.
- Audit for Reciprocity:
- Healthy relationships are built on a foundation of mutual exchange. Reflect on your closest connections: is there a balance of listening and speaking, giving and receiving? An intentional circle is one where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported in their individual journeys.
The Power of the Tribe
By intentionally curating the company you keep, you create a social “greenhouse” where your best qualities can flourish. A well-chosen circle doesn’t just provide comfort; it provides the collective strength and wisdom needed to navigate life’s inevitable challenges with grace.
